What May Looked Like
It's the last Thursday of May. I scrolled back through my camera roll this week and was a little surprised at what was in it.
Not in a "look what we did" kind of way. Just in a "huh, that all happened in thirty days" kind of way. The month filled up without me noticing, which is usually a sign it was a good one.
A few things worth holding on to:
I took the boat out with Tim Bachman, who some of you met in last week's newsletter. The lake was cold but the sun was generous, glass for the morning and a breeze for the rest. We pulled each other for a couple of sets, traded gear, talked about nothing important. By the time we got off the water, May felt earned.
A couple weeks before that, I drove down to the Seattle waterfront when the Clipper Race fleet stopped in town. The boats were tied up at the dock, the crews stepping off after months at sea. Most of them had never sailed before they signed up. You could walk right up and talk to them.
I made a video about it that's on the YouTube channel now. The short version is that the Clipper Race is one of those things you find out exists and then can't stop thinking about. People you'd never expect to do something like this, doing it. If sailing around the planet on a boat with strangers sounds insane, you should know that's also how it sounds to the people who've now done it. Worth a look.
Then there's the hike club.
We realized we weren't utilizing the local trails of the PNW enough, so we started a casual hike club. Fridays at 6:45am. Last week was Cougar Mountain, about fifteen minutes outside Seattle. A loop, some coffee, back home before most people are at their desks.
What I keep noticing about it is how little it took. We didn't plan a six-month buildup. We picked a Friday morning and got on the trail. The trails were always there.
There was also a mountain bike day with a couple of buddies that I won't try to make poetic. We rode, we ate, we drove home tired. Good day.
Speaking of which, I've got a downhill bike video coming out May 31st on the channel. An eBike buying guide will follow not long after. If two wheels is your thing or you're thinking about getting it to be your thing, keep an eye out.
That's what I keep coming back to when I look at the month. None of this was on a plan when May started. We just kept saying yes to small things and they added up.
A small heads-up before I sign off. We've got a Father's Day bundle going live on the site in the next few days. It's worth a look if you've got somebody in your life who would rather get gear than another tie. Watch the socials, we'll let you know when it drops.
Until next Thursday.
All the best,
-Tim
P.S. If May added up for you in a way you didn't expect either, hit reply and tell me about one of the moments. I read every one.
