I Took My Daughter to Costa Rica

Tow surfing a clean Costa Rica wave at sunrise

No wetsuit, just shorts and an impact vest.

It's barely six in the morning, early, and already past seventy out, but when the waves are forming nicely, that's the last thing on your mind .

We launch the jet skis straight off the beach and into the break. Fifteen minutes later I'm getting towed into some of the cleanest wave faces I've ever ridden.

Somewhere between twenty and thirty waves later, after a lot of good coaching, a few big falls, and pure stoke, I head in and have breakfast with my daughter.

That set the tone for the rest of it. We hiked to waterfalls, rode quads, walked black sand beaches, and watched the monkeys..

Costa Rica surf trip, riding a clean morning wave

Here's the part I'll keep.

It wasn't the waves, clean as they were. It was that she wanted to come. That we did a new thing in a place neither of us knew, together, and figured it out as we went.

That's what new adventures actually buy you. Not the photos. The fact that you went, and shared the experience with somebody.

This weekend is the longest day of the year. Saturday into Sunday, the turn of our June new year, the most light you'll get all twelve months. It's also Father's Day. I don't think that overlap is an accident. The best thing you can hand the next person down the line isn't a thing at all. It's the habit of saying yes to the trip while it's still in your head.

So if you've got the chance to take somebody somewhere new this summer, even just a Friday morning close to home instead of the far side of the world, take it. That's the inheritance.

Until next Thursday.

All the best,

P.S. If there's a dad in your life who'd rather get gear than another tie, forward this. And if you've got a trip you've been meaning to take a kid on, reply and tell me. Those are my favorite ones to read.
