We Do This in the Wrong Month

Long summer evening light over open water, the real start of the outdoor year

I keep getting caught off guard by the light right now. I'll finish dinner, look up, and it's still bright outside. Nine o'clock and the day isn't done with us yet.

We're a couple weeks out from the longest day of the year. June 20th. The days have been stretching since December, a little more light in each one, and right now we're near the top of the climb.

It's got me thinking about how backwards we run the calendar.

We put the new year at the other end of it. Late December, right on the shortest day, the coldest and darkest stretch there is. Up here that's somewhere around eight and a half hours of light, dark an hour or more before you leave work and stays dark until an hour or more after your morning workout and breakfast in the morning. Nothing about it is asking you to get outside and move.

That's the moment we've decided to reinvent ourselves. We try to become a new person at the exact time of year the body wants to do nothing but stay in bed.

It's a setup to fail.

The oldest calendars knew better. The earliest Roman one started in March, when the ground thawed and the work picked back up. Ten months, and the dead of winter wasn't even on it. No names, no numbers, just a blank stretch until spring. You can still catch the fingerprint of it today. September means the seventh month. December means the tenth. Nobody ever went back and fixed the names after the year got reshuffled.

I think the body still runs on that older clock. Right now it's telling you to get up and go before your alarm even has an opinion about it.

So this is the real one. The turn of our year.

This is the time to decide who you're going to be for the next twelve months. Not in the abstract. The fall trip you keep talking about. The ski week in January. What you want your body to be able to do when you get the chance to go after the sport you want.

The difference is the energy is here now. In January you're forcing it. In June it's already running through you at 5am whether you asked for it or not. Make the changes while the engine's warm.

That's the whole month for us. Treat June like the year is starting, because for people who love the outdoors, it is.

Until next Thursday.

All the best,

P.S. Reply and tell me one thing you want the next twelve months to include. Just one. I read every single one.
