What I Should Have Said

Tim and daughter Hannah on a Costa Rica beach after a morning tow foil session

Hannah flew home to Chicago on a Wednesday. She'd been in Costa Rica with me for the first few days. Before she left, she turned around and said, "Dad, this was my favorite tropical vacation. Thank you."

I didn't say anything back right away. I just stood there.

There's this thing that happens when your kid is grown enough to travel with you as a person and not just as your child. The trips stop being about the destination. They become about the time. And you start to realize how little of it you actually get.

I think about that moment a lot.

Last week I wrote about Costa Rica. I was trying to get across an idea that matters to me, which is that Half-Life can help you travel better. We've done the trip. We know what to expect. We can set you up so nothing catches you off guard.

But in trying to make that point, I focused on the friction instead of the experience. I talked about what I'd change instead of what made it incredible.

That was a mistake.

The truth is, Costa Rica was one of the best trips I've taken. The team down there is world class in every sense. I was picked up at my hotel every morning to foil. The airport transfer was seamless. The on-wave coaching was the best I've ever received… and I've been doing this a while. The hosts welcomed me into their home. They had dinner with me. They drove 40 minutes out of their way to help me with a rental car. You could show up to this trip with nothing but a bag of clothes and they'd have you on the water by sunrise.

I didn't capture any of that last week. I should have.

I've never written a newsletter before Half-Life. Never been a retailer. Never tried to build a lifestyle brand. I'm learning in real time and I make mistakes at every step. When I catch them, I try to own them quickly and get better.

This is me getting better.

If you want to see what the riding actually looks like, check out our UHA foil review. Start around the 4-minute mark and tell me that water doesn't make you want to book a flight.

We'll be publishing a full Costa Rica trip overview on the YouTube channel in the coming weeks. But I'll tell you right now, if you like warm water, beautiful beaches, great food, and waves that show up every single morning, you will love this trip.

Hannah knew it before I did. Sometimes your kid sees the thing more clearly than you do.

We're here to help you do more of what you love. That means getting it right, even when it takes two tries.

Until next Thursday.

All the best,

-Tim
