What Comes Next

Foiler on open water at dusk, Half-Life brand origins and what comes next

In 2019 Johnny and I came up with a concept for a brand/company that would inspire people to get active and stay active longer. In the ideation for naming, I became anchored on a physical fact: You start losing muscle mass around age 30, with a decline of roughly 3% to 5% per decade. To me, that resonated with the definition of half-life, the time required for half of a quantity, such as a radioactive atom or drug to decay, disappear, or be eliminated by natural processes. The goal was to shock people into taking immediate action and at some point you either accept that or you push back against it.

I chose to take action. I think most of you did too, otherwise you probably wouldn't be reading this.

That's always been the reason for this whole thing. Not the business side of it, just the belief that the people who keep moving, who keep getting in the water, on the trail, on the court… out the door when it would be easier not to; we end up living on different terms than everybody else. Not better. Just more on purpose.

People who keep moving, on the water, trail, and court, living on purpose

I've been thinking about that a lot as April wraps up. What started as a winter training idea, build a runway so you'd be ready when the season hit, turned into something I didn't expect. People started writing in. People started booking trips. People I've never met started telling me they forwarded the newsletter to a friend because something in it hit close to home.

That's the part I didn't plan for. The gear and the trips and the content, I can plan those. But the thing where somebody reads an email on a Thursday morning and texts it to their buddy and says you need to check this out, that just kind of happened. And it happened because of you.

So here's where my head is at going into May. I want to find more of that. More of the people who get it. More ways for this crew to actually connect with each other, not just through a screen but on the water, on the mountain, in whatever town you happen to be passing through. I don't know exactly what that looks like yet, but I know it starts with the people who are already here.

There's some new gear in the store we're really proud of. Foil Club. Surf Club. Racket Club. Even a reference to the idea of Memento Mori that speaks to the Half-Life origin ethos. Worth a look if you haven't been by in a while.

And if you've been thinking about a trip, we've had a few people reach out through the Adventures page lately. Tell us where you want to go. We'll help you get there.
