This Is What the Runway Built
I am writing this from Costa Rica.
A week ago I was in Seattle in the rain wondering if winter was ever going to let go. Now I am standing in a place where the water is warm, the wind showed up, and I have been on a foil every day since I landed. And the thing I keep thinking about is not how good it feels to be here. It is how different this trip feels compared to the same trip a year ago.
My body is faster. Not by a lot. But enough that I notice it on the water. The sessions are longer. The recovery is shorter. I am not dragging through day three the way I used to. And none of that happened this week. It happened in January and February and March, in the dark, in the gym, on mornings when Costa Rica felt like a very distant idea.
That is what the runway builds. Not a single moment. A baseline that you carry into everything.
Last week I shared Patrick's story. A guy who trains six days a week across more sports than most people attempt in a lifetime. His proudest moment this winter was not getting hurt. You all responded to that in a way that told me something important. This crew is not chasing highlights. You are chasing durability. The ability to keep saying yes to whatever shows up, whether it is a trip to Costa Rica, a Wednesday morning ski run, or a Tuesday night paddle with someone you just met.
We are about 30 days from the end of this runway. The season is not coming anymore. It is here. Some of you are already in it. First sessions, first trips, first days where the light lasts long enough to get out after work. And the ones who built through the winter are feeling the difference right now.
Here is what I want you to sit with this week. You do not have to be in Costa Rica to be living this. You just have to be the person who kept showing up when it was cold and dark and nobody was watching. That is the whole game. And you are already in it.
