The Water Remembers You

Foiler riding glassy open water at sunrise, the water remembers your body

My last wake foil session was December 6th. That is four months. Four months of gym, tennis, pickleball, skiing, walking the dog, and staring at a boat that was not going in the water.

In November it got hard to find anyone willing to come out. Too cold. Change of season. I get it. So the boat came out early December and I shifted into build mode. I was carrying 10 to 15 extra pounds and I knew the spring trips were coming whether my body was ready or not.

January I dropped 11 pounds. Not through anything exotic. Weights two to three days, cardio two to three days, and staying honest about what I was eating. The goal was to lose weight without losing strength. I will put a video together on exactly what I did because I think some of you are in the same spot right now. No cheesy sales pitch. Just what worked for me.

Then Costa Rica happened.

I spent six days tow foiling. Two hours a day. On day five I did 31 waves with only brief breaks. Across those six days I probably rode 200 waves. That is 200 times coming up out of the hole, riding the foil to get to the wave, and then trying to make the most of it. I had great coaching so I was pushing myself hard and learning techniques I had not tried before. I fell way more than I normally do. And I mean fell hard. It's water but at 25 plus miles per hour on dynamic surfaces it's quite a splash.

And here is the thing that matters. I came back injury free. Back intact. Body feeling good. A little tension in the right forearm, some slight soreness in the right calf, but on the whole, great. I am convinced the flexibility work I put in over the winter is what let me take those falls in stride.

Could I have been in better shape? Always. But it was good enough to make the most of the trip. On the water and off. My daughter was with me and we spent the afternoons hiking, doing ATVs, chasing waterfalls. The kind of stuff that only happens when your body says yes instead of maybe.

The water in Costa Rica is the warmest I have ever experienced. No wetsuit. Slipping off the jet ski into the water onto my board was everything I had been thinking about since January. That moment will fuel my bank for months.

This is what the runway builds. Not a single trip. A body and a mindset that lets you walk into whatever the season offers and get the most out of it. Patrick wrote in a few weeks ago and said his proudest moment was not getting hurt. I understand that now more than ever.

We are in the final 30 days of this runway. The season is not coming. It is here. And the work is either showing up for you or it is not. If it is, trust it. If it is not, you still have time to change that.

All the best,
