The Boring Stuff That Pays Off

La Ventana

I'm writing this from La Ventana.

Sand everywhere. Sun-scorched everything. And a week full of moments that remind me why I do all of this.

Free diving with sharks. Wing foiling in the Sea of Cortez. Walking down to the beach each morning before the wind picks up, coffee in hand, boards already on the truck. Last night we drove into the hills with locals for a bonfire and mezcal. That's not on any itinerary. That's the kind of thing that happens when you show up and say yes.

But here's what I want to talk about this week. None of this happens without the boring stuff.

The 90-Day Runway (Week 3)

Week 1, we talked about the concept. Week 2, I shared how I train. This week I want to talk about the part nobody posts about.

The logistics. The gear prep. The trip planning. The unsexy work that separates people who talk about adventures from people who actually go on them.

I'll be honest. I used to be terrible at this. I'd show up somewhere and realize I forgot a fin bolt. Or I hadn't checked the wind forecast closely enough. Or my gear bag was a mess and I wasted half a morning sorting through it when I could have been on the water.

These days I have a system. It's not complicated. It's just consistent.

Before any trip, I do three things. I check every piece of gear and make sure nothing needs replacing. I lay out exactly what I'm bringing and nothing extra. And I block the calendar weeks in advance so the trip actually happens instead of living in the "someday" pile.

The calendar part is the one most people skip. They wait for the right time. The right conditions. The right feeling. And then the season passes and they're still waiting.

Block it first. Figure out the details later. That's how La Ventana happened. That's how every good trip I've ever taken happened.

Friction Is the Enemy

Here's something I've been thinking about. The reason most of us don't do the things we want to do isn't motivation. We covered that last week. It's friction.

Every small barrier between you and the activity is a reason your brain will talk you out of it. Gear not ready? That's friction. No plan on the calendar? Friction. Don't know where to go or who to go with? Friction.

My job with Half-Life, the part I care most about, is removing that friction for you. That's why we're building out guided adventures. That's why the trip calendar exists. That's why the gear is on the site ready to go. So when you decide to move, there's nothing standing in the way.

Preparation isn't the opposite of adventure. It's what makes adventure possible.

Adventures on the Site

La Ventana just wrapped. What's next?

People have been reaching out about trips all month. Some of you are already locked in. If you've been on the fence, here's what's still on the board:

  • Jackson Hole: dates TBD (Ski)
  • Maui, Spring: dates TBD (Tow/Prone/Wing Foil and Pickleball)
  • Gorge: dates TBD (Wing Foil, Mountain Bike, Golf)
  • Chicama: Oct 2026 (Tow Foil)
  • Costa Rica: dates TBD (Tow Foil)
  • Maui, Fall: dates TBD

We're putting together something new with these trips. More on that soon. But the short version: we want to make it as easy as possible for you to show up, ride, and have the experience of a lifetime without worrying about the logistics.

That's our job. Your job is to block the calendar.
