Movement Is the Medicine
Periodically, some things just get stuck in my craw. Inevitably, it happens every few weeks. This can vary from trivial "why did my wife say that" to existential thoughts around my purpose and the fairness or lack thereof to life.
We recently lost two young men in our community (one to cancer, the other to a freak electrical accident in a pool). For me personally, quiet reflection while helpful doesn't work the issue out. It's movement - most of the time in water - but regardless movement.
It frees my mind, provides perspective, thankfulness, and unlocks the problem solving part of my mind. It doesn't change the devastating loss we experienced, it just helps me work through it.
The medicine is the motion
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I think it's a good time to name something most of you have already lived. The body and the head work on each other. The body gets out the door and the head clears. The head says "we need to move" and the body answers. They keep each other going. The thing you've been doing for your body has been doing something for your head this whole time. The session that ended a hard day. The walk that broke a bad mood. The ride you took when you didn't feel like talking to anyone. None of that was incidental.
The medicine was in the motion. You don't really need to be told. You already know this. Your body tells you so every time you get back from a session feeling better than you did when you left. So here's the small ask for the week ahead. Bring somebody with you. It's Bike to Work Week. The hook is the bike, but the point is the somebody. The most reliable way to keep showing up is to do it with another person on the hook. You text a buddy at 6am. They text back, "fine." Now you're both going. Neither of you would have gone alone.
That's how the medicine actually works.
Solo gets you started. Crew keeps you going.
HALF/LIFE Store
We've got lots in the shop to help get you out there.
The new carbon mast went up in the shop this week. Stiffer through transitions. Quicker recovery off the rail. Less drag on the rig.
If you want to talk through whether it makes sense for your setup, the consultation link is below. I'd rather have the conversation than the sale.
The season is open. Bring somebody. Until next Thursday. All the best, -Tim P.S. If this hit, send it to the friend whose name just popped into your head.
Lessons with HALF/LIFE
This is what it looks like when it clicks. One session. The right water. Somebody on the boat who's done this a thousand times telling you exactly when to stand. That's the difference between watching videos and actually getting flying. Spring is here! Your setup matters more than you think. Every rider's environment, weight, and goals point to a different kit. That's why we do this. $25 gets you 15-30 minutes with us to figure out exactly what makes sense for your water. We've built hundreds of custom setups. We'll take the consultation fee off your order. No pressure, just answers.
What's Happening on the Channels
What would make someone leave behind everyday life to race a 70-foot yacht across the world's most dangerous oceans? The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is one of the toughest endurance challenges on Earth. Covering more than 40,000 nautical miles over nearly a year, the race takes everyday people, many with no prior sailing experience, and transforms them into ocean racers through intensive training. Crews face towering waves, sleep deprivation, storms in the Roaring Forties, and nonstop teamwork while crossing the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Oceans. Only the skipper and first mate are professionals. Everyone else is there for the adventure of a lifetime. This series is an inside look at the people, pressure, camaraderie, and raw reality behind "The World's Greatest Ocean Adventure." No experience required. No shortcuts given. Just the open ocean.
