December Check-In: Community

Merry Christmas to those celebrating today. I hope you're with people you love, doing something that fills you up.

I wanted to close out this month's newsletters with a story that's been sitting with me all year. It's not a light one. But it's the right one.

A guy from Colorado sent me a video a while back of himself doing a ladder move on a wake foil. He wanted me to repost it. I did.

A handful of days later, he called me.

That video, he said, was the last time he'd been on foil. The next day, something didn't feel right behind his eye. He went to the doctor. It turned out to be a brain tumor.

He had a craniotomy. Then radiation. Then chemotherapy.

When he called me, he wasn't looking for sympathy. He had two goals. The first was to live. The second was to get back on foil.

I don't know a lot of people who, while staring down something that heavy, are still thinking about the thing that makes them feel most alive. But that's who this guy is.

So I made some calls. I connected him with a friend in San Diego who could set him up for a wake foil session with his family. I sent him a Colorado Outpost shirt and hat. Just something to let him know we were pulling for him.

A few weeks later, I got a photo. Him in the shirt. Smiling.

He was stoked. Not because of the gear. Because he's still here. Still fighting. Still thinking about the next time he gets to ride.

Why This Matters

I'm not telling this story to be heavy. I'm telling it because this is what Half-Life is actually about.

It's not just a brand. It's not just gear. It's a network of people who understand that time on the water, on the mountain, in the air, doing the thing you love, that time matters. And when one of us is down, the rest of us show up.

I was able to pick up the phone, call someone I knew, and say, "Hey, can you set this guy up when he's in town?" And without hesitation, the answer was yes.

That's the value of community. That's what we're building here.

Looking Ahead

In 2026, I want to keep building this. More connections. More activations. More moments where someone in the Half-Life crew can reach out and know there's someone on the other end ready to help.

If you've ever wondered what it means to be part of something bigger than yourself, this is it. And we're just getting started.
