Don't Leave It For Later

Foiler launching off the back of a boat at sunrise, not leaving it for later

I was on the road last week. Driving through parts of the country I'd never seen, between meetings, with long stretches of windshield time in between.

You think a lot on those drives.

Somebody handed me a book before the trip. They said, "you already know all of this." And I did. But I read it anyway, on the plane home, in about an hour.

It's called "Don't Leave Anything for Later."

The thesis is the kind of thing you've heard a hundred times. Life is short. The math is finite. If you assume an average life expectancy of seventy-five, take the difference between that and however old you are right now, multiply by four, and that's how many seasons you have left. Not metaphorical seasons. Actual ones. Spring, summer, fall, winter.

It wasn't new. I just hadn't done the math in a while.

The thing I keep coming back to is how much of what's good in this life shows up because somebody decided not to leave it for later. Somebody put the boat back in the water in early May instead of late June. Somebody booked the trip while it was still in their head instead of saying "next year." Somebody took the first session of the season even though they hadn't ridden in five months and the lake was cold.

That's what April was for. The runway built the foundation. The season is the house. You don't feel it day to day. You feel it when the first run of the year doesn't feel like the first.

Same legs. Different person.

The other thing that compounded this winter was the inbox.

Emails forwarded to friends. DMs from people thinking about where their next trip should be. Sessions booked by people I've never met because somebody they trust told them to. Crew showing up at lessons because somebody else said go.

None of that was the plan when we sent the first newsletter in February. It's turning into the thing we care about most. And it happened because of you.

The stuff I can plan, I plan. The stuff where one of you reads something on a Thursday morning and texts it to a buddy with "you need to check this out." That's not a plan. That's people.

So here's where my head is heading into May. More of the people who get it. More ways for this crew to actually find each other, not just through a screen.

The season is open. The work is showing up.

Don't leave it for later.

HALF/LIFE Store

Speaking of work that compounds.

The new carbon mast went up in the shop this week. Stiffer through transitions. Quicker recovery off the rail. Less drag on the rig.

If you want to talk through whether it makes sense for your setup, the consultation link is below. I'd rather have the conversation than the sale.

Until next Thursday.

All the best,

P.S. If somebody you know is still telling themselves they'll get back into it next year, forward this to them. The math doesn't get better.
